During the summer before moving into their off-campus house, Spartans can take steps to prepare for a stress-free transition. Here's a list of tasks to consider:

  • Start saving money for rent, furniture, groceries, and other living expenses related to moving into a new house.

  • Review and understand the lease agreements, including terms, conditions, and responsibilities.

  • Consider purchasing renter's insurance to protect personal belongings in case of theft, fire, or extreme Michigan weather events.

  • Create a budget that accounts for rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and other living expenses.

  • Research local utilities and compare their rates/services to ensure a smooth setup of essential services.

  • Begin decluttering and organizing personal belongings to make the moving process easier.

  • Update contact information with MSU Registrar, banks, and employers to ensure smooth communication and mail delivery.

  • Take inventory of valuable items and photographing them for insurance purposes.

  • Communicate with potential roommates about move-in dates and coordinate schedules to ensure everyone is available to help with the move.

  • Start researching and purchasing any necessary furniture or household items that will be needed in the new house.

  • Start packing non-essential items that won't be needed immediately in the new house.

  • Begin planning transportation logistics for the move, including renting a truck, hiring movers, or coordinating with friends or family for help.

  • Take some time to relax and enjoy the summer before the busy transition to off-campus housing!

By taking these steps during the summer before moving, Spartans can effectively prepare for their first off-campus living experience and minimize any last-minute stressors.
